The Father Immigrant, Peter Hallock,
a myth?:
William Hallock, the likely settler:
Born: About 1620, in an unknown place in England. It is likely that William Hallock was of majority age when Southold was formed. That would make him born by 1620. No birth records of his children have been found, but are believed to have been born from about 1644-1667, based on ages of grandchildren. That would mean a "no later than" date of 1626. The earliest firm date on a grandchild is Barnabas Horton, September 23, 1666. Thirty-six years before would give a "no later than" date of 1630, but it is doubtful Barnabas is the oldest grandchild. Conclusion: use "about 1620."
Spouse of William: Margaret
[Unknown / Howell?].
May be a Widow Howell: Note that there is a 1675 real estate deed in which William Hallock refers to Richard Howell as "son-in-law", but in the 1600's this term included step-sons, which could mean that William Hallock's wife was Richard Howell's mother (not his sister, as indicated by the Hallock Genealogy). It could also mean step-son in the sense that we use the term today. If this is so, and if Richard was a son of the wife of William Hallock, it suggests that Richard's wife in 1675 is from an earlier wife of William Hallock, ie a step-brother married step-sister.
Furthermore, it should be noted the records do not indicate which
daughter of William Hallock is the wife of Richard Howell. Tradition
holds it was Elizabeth, but this is not proven. (He is without a wife in
the 1698 census, but had married the widow Elizabeth (___) Cooke, between
Nov 1684 - Dec 1685. This indicates whoever the first wife of Richard Howell
was did not mother all of his children, and had died before 1684. That
wife could have been any of William Hallock's daughters - if he was a "son-in-law"
in the sense we use the term today. The identity as her as Elizabeth probably
comes from records showing he had a wife named Elizabeth, but that would
be the second wife, Elizabeth (Cooke) Harrud.
1698 Census: A Margaret Hallock, presumably the wife of the immigrant, William Hallock, is in the 1698 census in the household of Joseph Reeve, his wife Abigail, and their children. This entry gives rise to the conjecture that William Hallock's daughter Abigail is this wife of Joseph Reeve.
Death: 9 May 1707
"Margaret Hallock dead wid" (Salmon Records)
Death: September 28, 1684, in Southold, New York. If he were born in 1620, he would have been 64.
