The origins of Margaret 'Margery' (___) Davis are unknown.

Born:  Abt 1603, aged 32 in 1635 on passenger list of the Elizabeth.

Per Savage's Dictionary of New England Settlers: "There came in the Elizabeth 1635, from London to Boston, Margaret Davis, aged 32, with her ch. John, 9; Mary, 4; and Eliz. 1; the w. and fam. no doubt of some person wh. had come a yr. or two bef. and to find the h. and f. may be the happiness of some more skilful inquirer."

See the passenger List of the "Elizabeth" for the entries for this family. Note that the boy in this list is given as "Jo" which would be Joseph, not John, which would be "Jno". Either is a possibility at this point.

Torrey says "calls William Owens son-in-law" in their entry, gives no date for marriage.

Savage shows:
 

GRICE, or GRISE, CHARLES, Braintree, freem. 1651, had w. Margery provided for in his will of 9 Nov. 1661, pro. 12 Nov. 1663, a s. David then in Eng. of wh. it was so unc. whether he would come hither within three yrs. after d. of testator's w. that testator would give to either s. that would come of his bros. John and William, and if neither of them would come, within three yrs. after notice, then all his real est. in fee to s.-in-law William Owen. Whether Owen had m. a d. of Grice, or Grice had m. the mo. of devisee in this contingency, I hope the historian of Braintree will discover, or, at least, show, if the est. bec. vested in this s.-in-law."
 
Ancestors of American Presidents, in Millard Fillmore's tfel, corroborates that that the wife of Charles Grice was the mother of Elizabeth Davis, who married William Owens.

The primary source I have found for the Widow Margary Davis is The Great Migration (Anderson, Sanborn & Sanborn, NEHGS, 2001), sketch of the widow Margaret Davis, pp 303-4.

Margery (__) / Charles Grice / William Owens is also treated in Torrey, Savage, and Ancestors of American Presidents. A search of booksellers turns up no published genealogies. Since her only progeny is through a daughter, descendants would be found in agnate genealogies of William Owen, or spouses of his children.
 
 

NOT wife of Dolor Davis

Some compilations, including Ancestral file, show the parents of Elizabeth Davis who married William Owen as Margery Willard, wife of Dolor Davis, another immigrant to the New World. This is most likely an error. Torrey shows that Dolor Davis marrying a second time and dieing in 1673 (after our Margery's marriage to Charles Grice and after Charles Grice' death.) The only way this could have happened would be if their marriage ended in divorce, which is unlikely. Torrey usually points out divorces when they happened and he does not do so here. Grice's reference to William Owen as son-in-law surely means his wife is the Margery Davis, mother of Elizabeth Davis, spouse of William Owen. This is corroborated in Millard Fillmore's tfel in Ancestors of American Presidents, Roberts, 1995.

The sketch of Margaret Davis in The Great Migration shows no relationship of this Margaret Davis to Dolor Davis; although this reference confusingly mentions the "widow Davis" entry on the passenger list in the Dolor Davis sketch without any further comment. There are sketches for both Dolor and Margaret in this reference - the most current survey of knowledge about them to date.
