Bucks, England > Lynne, Mass 1635 > Long Island, NY 1640 |
See Daniel Hanke's page, for John Cooper's, his wife's, English genealogy.
Immigration: The Hopewell,
April 1, 1635, aged 41 (I assume this was embarkation date. This was likely
among the first ships in the spring of that year.) with wife Wibroe, aged
42, and children Mary, 13; John, 10; Thomas, 7; and Martha, 5.
Founder of Southampton, Long Island: He was likely among that group of settlers from Lynn, including Edward Howell, who founded Southampton, Long Island in or around 1640.
Spouse: Wibroe Griggs. Her origins, relatives in England and New England, and the family of John Cooper are well presented in TAG 64:193 Oct 1989. She was born about 1593 (aged 42 in the ship manfest of 1635), in probably Buckingham Co, England. Their marriage record has been identified and proven as October 18, 1618, in Olney, Bucks, England. This was her second marriage. She was married first to William Pierson on July 25, 1609, in Olney, Bucks, England and had a son, Henry Pierson, who also came to the New World. He likely came at a different time. He also settled at Southampton. Thus, Wibroe is the "matriarch" to two American families. She died Bef. May 06, 1662, in Southampton, Long Island. She would have been 69 in 1662.
Died: Aft. May 06, 1662, date his will was written in Southampton, Long Island. (The date the will was proven is not known.) He was about 68 when he wrote this will.
Estate / Will: He left a
will, dated May 6, 1662, date proven not known, some of the provisions
of which are presented in TAG 64:193 Oct 1989. He mentioned:
Immigrant John > Martha, here's a page I have found with some of her descendants
Some Cooper Genealogies carry this Mary Cooper as married to a Samuel
Whitehead in
1682. I know there were Whiteheads in New Haven, CT and also a separate
John Cooper
family there. I've also seen Whitehead families in Long Island,
so not sure where this
Sameuel's family is. Have also seen where this Samuel had a father
named Samuel, confusing
things even more ie which did what.
I'm exploring whether the same Mary Cooper was married first to Samuel
Whitehead, then
to John Penny. Does anyone have a firm date on the death of the
Samuel who was married
to Mary Cooper? I've seen on the web a date of 1690 applied both
to the father and son
Samuel Whitehead, so wondering if folks really know which one died
at that time.
Also exploring whether this Samuel Whitehead married another Mary
Cooper, possibly of
the John Cooper family in New Haven, CT not the John Cooper family
of Southampton,
Long Island.
Would also like to know on what evidence is the Samuel / Mary Cooper
marriage coming
from - a marriage record, a will of the father of the bride or some
other family member,
etc??
The identity of "MY" Mary Cooper comes from:
4. Virginia Wines, Pioneers of Riverhead Town, (Copyright 1981),
P.
29, (Liber A. p 114) John Pinney of the Town of Southampton,
blacksmith, appointed his brother-in-law Samuel Cooper as his attorney
"to sell all my housing and lands....to pay my debts.....Mar 22,
1696/7.
Can anyone provide assistance to try to pin down who this Mary Cooper is?
For years, Cooper and Pierson genealogists have carried Henry Pierson, of Southampton, Long Island, New York as married to Mary Cooper and shown her as the matriarch of the Pierson descendants from that immigrant. Thomas Cooper II, in TAG 64:193 Oct 1989 convincingly demonstrates that Henry Pierson was a son of Wibroe Griggs from a previous marriage, and step-son of John Cooper, of Southampton, Long Island, New York. The Mary he married is unknown, and nothing further is known of Mary Cooper, daughter of John Cooper, than her entry on the passenger list when the family migrated to America.
The confusion started with John Cooper referring to Henry Pierson as his son-in-law in his will. In 1600 terminology, son-in-law could have referred to either son-in-law, as we now define the term, or what we now call step-son.
Although there was already evidence of this link before Thomas Cooper's article, the "smoking gun" piece of evidence is an English will, transcribed in the TAG article, where Thomas Cooper, son of John, and Henry Pierson, join together to sell some real estate and describe themselves as brothers from the same mother.

HANNAH FROST, m. July 29, 1702, on Long Island, John Cooper.
Some genealogies show "ghost" daughters of John Cooper as married
to two Topping men, apparently to account for the parents of Topping children
named in John Cooper's will. The thinking being that these children are
grandchildren of immigrant John Cooper from unknown daughters. Thomas Cooper
II, in TAG 64:193 Oct 1989, reveals these children were GREAT grandchildren
of John Cooper, the immigrant, and were grandchildren of their daughter,
Ann, who married John White. Note his will was written May 6, 1662, just
after the births of these great-grandchildren. The family structure, thus
presented, is:
1 Anne Cooper 1619 - 1686
.. +John White 1620 - 1662
.... 2 John White 1642 -
.... 2 Hannah White 1644 -
........ +Thomas Topping 1642 -
........... 3 Thomas Topping 1660 - >
Mentioned in John Cooper's Will
.... 2 Sarah White 1646 -
........ +John Topping 1644 -
........... 3 Sarah Topping 1662 - >
Mentioned in John Cooper's Will
........... 3 Temperance Topping 1663

If, the wife of John Penny was Mary Cooper, daughter of John Cooper,
we have two lines of descent from John Cooper:
