Early Puritan Immigrants
to the Massachusetts Bay Colony
Charlestown, then Woburn
We descendants of Henry Baldwin of Woburn find ourselves in the
Richardson Family from the marriage of Henry to Phebe Richardson in 1649.
All descendants of Henry Baldwin, the immigrant to Woburn, are also Richardsons.Ezekiel and Susannah (Bradford) were in Winthrop's Fleet, which was
the first migration of settlers (besides the earlier exploratory migrants)
Born:1604 - "based on
estimated date of marriage and chronology of siblings"(TGMB)
Proof to parents: Ezekiel's baptism
record is not found with his siblings in the English records. His status
as their sibling lies in his will and the wills of his siblings and real
estate transactions with them.
Immigration: In 1630, with Winthrop's
Fleet. Wife Susanna and probably oldest child, Phebe, came in that fleet.
Phebe was among the earliest baptisms in New England, recorded in Boston,
June 03, 1632.
Residences: Charlestown 1630 >
Spouse: Susanna, likely
married in England just a few years before their migration. Surname of
Bradford, used by many people, not proven. She survived Ezekiel and married,
second, Henry Brooks on March 21, 1651, age estimated 41. She died September
15, 1681, in Woburn, aged estimated 71 years.
Freeman: Was admitted to freeman
status May 18, 1631.
Died: October 21, 1647, Woburn,
Middlesex Co, Mass. Age approximately 43. Children aged from 4-15 years
Joseph Richardson did NOT marry
Hannah Green, daughter of William Green of Woburn
This is a mistake that is being repeated continuously. (In fact, Ancestral
File at LDS currently has Hannah Green, daughter of William Green of Woburn
married to both Joseph Richardson and Thomas Knowlton at the same time,
having babies with both men at the same time!) I hope that all Richardson
researchers will point this error out to anyone showing this relationship
on a web page, a gedcom, or anywhere else they find it.
Joseph Richardson, son of immigrant Samuel, married Hannah Green,
daughter of Thomas Green of Malden. A marriage is listed for Joseph Richardson
and Hannah Green in Woburn records, with a date of November 05, 1666. Although
I haven't verified the identity of that Hannah Green, other authorities
have, from Vinton and others, including the author of the genealogy of
Thomas Green of Malden.
I have, however, verified to a certainty, that the Hannah Green,
daughter of William Green of Woburn, married Thomas Knowlton. This comes
from the probate papers for William Green, where Thomas Knowlton signed
for his wife's money due from the estate of William Green. For more details
on that side of the issue, see my Green
and Knowlton research notes.
