Cambridge, home of Cambridge University, has been an important settlement
and market for more than 900 years as a result of the river and the Roman
road which crossed it near the foot of the present-day Castle Street. It
is north of London. This was a major trading route between Eastern and
Central England. The Romans and the Saxons established and extended the
early settlement and William the Conqueror established his castle on the
mound which still survives today. The Saxon tower of St. Bene't's Church
in Bene't Street is the City's oldest surviving building, dating from the
early 11th century.
