The origins of the Widow Rose and her probable children: Thomas and Mary Rose, of New London, Conn are unknown. We don't know for sure if the widow was widowed in England and she came to America with family or friends, or if she was widowed here.

Widow Joanna Rose

There is little known about the Widow Rose. There is no evidence to show she was Eames, or Rathbone, or Ransford; all names speculated for her maiden name. Her origins and maiden name are unknown. The first name of her husband is also unknown, although since the name Thomas was repeated down into future generations, it might be Thomas. Neither is there any known relationship with Daniel Rose of Wethersfield, Conn or Robert Rose of Mass, or the Rose's of Long Island. It is possible she is an unrecorded daughter of another immigrant and married in America.

Savage's Dictionary of New England Settlers says, under Thomas Fleming:

"FLEMING, ROBERT, Stonington 1669, had grant of land 30 Sept, that year. and died before 1681, leaving widow Joanna and daughter Mary Rose, possibly other children."

Torrey's New England Marriages Before 1700 has:

"ROSE, [Thomas?] & Joanna __?__  ( --1693+), m/2 Robert FLEMMING by 1674, m/3 __?__ OLMSTEAD bef 1687; b=first born: 1659; ?CT

"FLEMMING, Robert ( --1681) & Joanna [ROSE], wid, m/3 OLMSTED bef 1687; b=first born: 8 Dec 1674; Stonington, CT

"OLMSTED, __?__ & Joanna (ROSE) [FLEMMING], w Robert; aft 18 Jul 1687; ? Stonington/Preston, CT"

History of the 1st Congregational Church Stonington, Connecticut, Pg 41:

"In 1668 a census of the inhabitants of the town was ordered to be taken, embracing those only who were inhabitants or heads of families. February 2. There were found to be forty-three inhabitants, viz.: ..... Robert Fleming"

Tidbits from above:

The "b 8 Dec 1674" entry under Flemming shows she may have had children with Robert Flemming and we may have some half-cousins in the Flemming family. This is because b usually means "date of first born" in Torrey.

Torrey apparently found some evidence of her being alive in 1693.

The Mary described in Savage is likely the Mary Rose who married Robert Parke. Her descendants are cousins to Princess Diana, as Princess Diana is a Parke descendant.

Thomas Rose

Born:  Prob about 1660. Oldest known marriage or child of the children of Thomas of which I am aware was the marriage of his daughter, Joanna, to Edward Avery on June 03, 1699. This should mean he was born, at the latest, 1699 less 36 years, at 18 years per generation, or 1663. He died in 1643, which would make him 80, if born at that time. Round to about 1660. Torrey estimates 1653, Sterry Genealogy 1655.
 
Note: The Sterry Genealogy says he was born abt 1655 and Hannah abt 1648. This makes them both over ninety when they died, Hannah almost 100. I guess I've seen too many folks in the 1600's claim to live past 90. I suggest those dates are the earliest, 1660 the latest,  parameters of a range of  birthdates for them.


Immigration:  Unknown.

Spouse:  Hannah Allyn, daughter of immigrant and neighbor, Robert Allyn of New London and Norwich, Conn. Probably by 1680, Torrey gives "Sep 16, 1680?". I don't know the source for that date. Torrey shows first child born 1681? Earliest grandkids born probably about 1705, which easily fits a 1680 marriage date.

The proof for this relationship is reported to be in Robert Allyn's will or estate papers, of September 20, 1683, where he referred to her as Hannah Rose, but I have not yet seen a transcription or copy of that will. She survived Thomas and died three years later on January 05, 1746. History of New London, Connecticut, by Frances Manwaring Caulkins, 1895
 

 
Occupation:  Unknown, probably a farmer, possibly with livestock. He seems to have had a fairly large estate for the times, which raises the question of whether he dabbled in real estate.

Death:  April 19, 1744 from the Sterry Genealogy, reported by others to be November 20, 1743, New London Co, Conn, but I have not find that date or event in the Barbour Collection. These dates may be coming from dates in his estate packet.

Estate/Will:  Per  Caulkins, History of Norwich, "he died in 1743, leaving an estate valued at 2,498 pounds."

Children:  He named eight daughters (two deceased, apparently both with heirs) and two sons (one deceased, with heirs) in his will.
 
 

Thomas Rose was included in list of sketches of "others having original home-lots and all the privileges of first proprietors" in History of Norwich, Connecticut, by Frances Manwaring Caulkins, 1874.   "Rose. Thomas Rose was an early settler in the southern part of Preston. His name acquired notoriety from the situation of his dwelling house. A large oak tree near the house was a noted boundary mark between Norwich and New London, standing as a stately warder precisely at the southeast corner of Norwich. It was directly upon the line running east from the head of Poquetannock Cove to the bounds of Stonington, and is referred to in several surveys, acts, and patents." The History of Norwich goes on to add:   Pg 261, "(in a description of property being added to New London)... "thence upon a direct line to an oak tree marked and standing near the dwelling house of Thomas ROSE." Pg 354, "Zacharia Maynard, or Mayner, purchased a farm in 1697, near Robert ALLYN and Thomas ROSE, (in Ledyard). His wife was a daughter of Robert Geer."

What Evidence Supports the Conclusion that the Thomas Gates, father of the Mary Gates who married Thomas Rose, is the Thomas Gates, son of Stephen Gates of Hingham, Mass?
 
The will of Thomas Gates, Dated July 10, 1723, which I have not seen, is reported to have:

Named all his children, giving his Stow lands to his son John. To sons Joseph and Caleb he gave £5 each, to bring up their children to read and write the English tongue well. His married daughters got £3 each, "to lern their children." To daughter Mary Rose, the legacy at Sudbury given her mother by her uncle Joseph Noyes.

Thomas Gates, son of Stephen Gates of Hingham, is known to have lived in Stow and Sudbury. Elizabeth (Freeman) Gates, wife of the Thomas Gates from Hingham , was a daughter of Elizabeth Noyes. This, then, is the critical piece of evidence that links the Thomas Gates of Norwich, Conn to be the same man as the Thomas Gates of Hingham, Mass.


Who is the Hannah Rose md Ezekiel Main?
 

Torrey gives a marriage for Ezekiel Main, of Stonington, Conn, died 1715, to a Hannah Rose, 10/22/1695. Who is this lady.... She's a touch old to be a daughter.. another sister of Thomas?? He had a daughter named Hannah... continuing a naming pattern?? This Hannah married Samuel Sterry, February 22, 1703, and was referred to by that name in Thomas' 1643 will, so it is doubtful his daughter is the Hannah who married Ezekiel Main. If she's not a sister, could she be from that other bunch of Rose's over by Wethersfield, Conn?


Is the Mary Rose who married Robert Parke a sister of Thomas Rose?
 

A Mary Rose married Robert Parke and is shown in the lines of descent of various folks related to Princess Diana, as she was a Parke, by Gary Boyd Roberts. By the ages of her children, she was a contemporary of Thomas. Savage shows under his entry under "FLEMING, ROBERT, Stonington 1669, had gr. of land 30 Sept, that yr. and d. bef. 1681, leav. wid. Joanna and d. Mary Rose, possib. other ch.". This is apparently the same man Torrey shows as a second husband for the Widow Joanna Rose, and the mentioned daughter would then be a sister of Thomas Rose.... is there additional evidence??
