John and Sally (Smith) Pollock

Scotch / Irish Immigrants
To Philadelphia, Approximately 1790-1800
A Faithful Transcription of an Old Family Document


"John Pollock's father moved from Scotland to Ireland, then back to Scotland. John Pollock was born near Cumber Co, Ireland. He married Sallie Smith. They had 13 children, all born near Cumber Co, Ireland. He came to America with his family in 1780. (** Two other, different, dates for the immigration are given later in this article **). Settled in Washington Co, Pennsylvania, then moved to Fayett Co, Penn, then to Harrison Co, Ohio, in 1811. He died in 1818, and his wife in 1820. Ages unknown. Their children were:

Lydia, Nancy, James, William, Lydia No. 2, Nancy No. 2, Betsy, Jane, John, Samuel, Clement, Hugh, and Robert.

James and William, 3rd and 4th children of John and Sallie Pollock, came to America before the family did. James died of yellow fever, the third case in Philadelphia. William was drowned in the Scuylkill River near Philadelphia. Both died before the family came to America.

Nancy, 2nd daughter of John Pollock, married Robert Adrian, in Ireland. Adrian was in the rebel army, was wounded and captured. Fifty guineas were offered for his head, dead or alive. He escaped to America. His wife came to America with the Pollock family in 1800. (** Two other, different dates for the immigration are given later in this article **).

John and Samuel, 9th and 10th children of John Pollock, were in the war of 1812. John served 6 months and Samuel nearly 3 months. John, Samuel, and Clement, (the 11th child), walked 12 miles to see the battle of Bellmaheneh. Ireland. Hugh, the 12th child, was killed by a falling tree.

Samuel, the 10th child of John and Sallie Pollock, was born Feb., 1788, near Cumber Co, Ireland. He came to America with his parents in 1790 (** Two other, different, dates for the immigration are given later in this article **), and settled in Washington Co, Pennsylvania, then moved to Fayett Co, Penn, then to Harrison Co, Ohio.

Samuel married Fannie Wilkin, who was born in July, 1801, in Fayette Co, Penn. He died in Mansfield, Ohio, September 6, 1876, aged 88 years. Their children were: Eliza Jane, Sarah Ann, Margaret Julia, Lydia Helen, John Wilkin, Nancy Frances, Martha Ellen, Matthew Ellen, Matthew Elliot Fernando, William Wallace, James Russell, George Smith, Mary Ellen, and Calvin Jonathon. (Dates of birth were given).

William Wallace Pollock, the ninth child of Samuel and Fanny (Wilkin) Pollock, was born June 25, 1835, near Mansfield, Ohio. He was married to Armelia Elizabeth Alger, who was born in Mansfield, Ohio, June 8, 1940. They moved from Mansfield to Kirksville, Missouri, in 1867, then in 1873, to Ada, Kansas (Ottawa, Co). William Wallace died Oct. 4, 1924, aged 89 years. His wife, Armelia, died Nov 8, 1880, aged 41 years. Their children were: Harriet Loetta, Lillie May, Kittie Irene, Deloss, Samuel Roy, Fannie Lyda, Charles Sylvester, Fannie Ida Lulu, and Robert Irwin." (Dates of birth given.)

"These items of interest were typed and added to a copy of the family tree of the Pollock family. The original copy was written so many years ago that it is almost unreadable. Uncle Charles borrowed it, and had an expert interpret it and make a dozen copies. These copies correspond exactly with the copy shown below. - - Neola Hallock Carpenter. (Note, although "Heritage" was published in 1986, I believe this quotation from Neola was written years before that. Neola Hallock is a daughter of Morris Wells Hallock and was born in 1901.)
