Early Long Island Settler |
Spouse: Thomas Osman married Martha Purrier on 6 Jan 1652/53 in Long Island, New York and then had children over an estimated time span of 20 years. Marriage recorded in Southold Town Records. (Case, pg 464).
Immigration: He probably migrated as a somewhat young man, sometime before 1653, and likely single.
Residences: I only know of his residence in Long Island, most likely Southold.
Death: Unknown to me. He is believed to have had his children through 1672, so at least living then.
Estate / Will: None that I am aware of.
1658 Deposition: From the
Wheeler Page, we have: "Thomas Osman gave a deposition in 1658 in which
he told the story of he, William Purrier, Thomas Reeve, James Reeve, Thomas
Terill, William Salmon, Thomas Benedict, Henry Whitney and others exploring
for "sperrits resin" (turpentine) in "ye Chowan country" (North Carolina)
in 1636/37. Upon failure of this adventure, these men in the following
winter or spring settled on Hashamomuck Neck in the present town of Southold,
Long Island. A copy of this deposition appears in the Southold Commemorative
Book, 1636-1939. ("Genealogy up to 1800 of the Reeve Family of Southold,
Long Island, NY," Wesley L. Baker, 1970, page 340)."

Pg 183: 1 REBECCA,3 (John, 1,) b. (???), 1660-70.
M. Abram Osman before 1690. Ch. Joseph, John, Rebecca? Sarah? Abraham?
Dorothy? (Doc. Hist. N. Y. i. 452. Moore's Index of Southold, 105, 106.)
Probably Ab. Osman married a Martha, who died 1706, and Abram and Dorothy,
and perhaps Sarah, may be the children of this second wife.
The Will of Jacob Osman - is this the son, or a grandson, of Thomas Osman?
Page 108.--In the name of God, Amen, October 12, 1755. I, JACOB OSMAN, of Southold, in Suffolk County, yeoman, being sick. I leave to my beloved wife Sarah the use of all lands and buildings for her comfortable support during the time she remains my widow. The reversion of said lands and buildings I leave to my eldest son, Peter Osman, and he shall pay to his sister, Elizabeth Osman, œ3 when the said lands become his. My executors are to sell personal property sufficient to pay debts, and the rest I leave to my wife for her comfortable support and to dispose of at her discretion among my 4 younger children, Sarah, Deborah, Almodan, and Elizabeth Osman. I make my wife and my neighbor, John Clark, executors.
NOTE: My Esther not mentioned in this will...but she would have been out of the house for some years by then, b 1695. If this is his will and not a grandson of Thomas.
NOTE: This will doesn't seem to feel right for Jacob, son of immigrant Thomas. Maybe grandson? The girls are referred to as if they were unmarried and still at home. These ladies should be well into their forties by 1755.
