The origins of Thomas Carter are unknown to me. It is said he may have been born in Devonshire. See the Devon, England Home Page.

Born:   Said to have been born May 08, 1566, in possibly Devonshire, but this appears too early. I don't know the source for that information. This would make him 70 when he migrated. He was more likely born 20 years or so later, 1580, twenty years or so before the birth of his first child, about 1600-1610. This would make him aged in his fifties when he migrated.

Immigration:   After 1633, but by 1636 when he was admitted to freeman status (first record), ship unknown.

Occupation:  Blacksmith. Also served as a constable, as he was fined for being late in directing witnesses to a trial.

Spouse:  First name Mary, identity unknown. Born by 1586, 18 years before estimated birth of oldest child in 1604-7. Married by 1604-7. She survived Thomas and died 2 years after Thomas died, on March 6, 1664/5, estimated age at least 82.

Residence:  Charlestown, Suffolk Co, Mass. Sometimes referred to as "of Woburn". The dividing lines between the towns seems to be a bit fuzzy in those days. Parts of what were once Charlestown became Woburn.

Died:  1652, in Charlestown. Probably in his 70's. Children were all adults by then.

Estate/Will:   Named wife Mary, eldest son Thomas, other sons Samuel, Joseph and John, daughters Mary and Hannah, grandsons Caleb Carter, Joseph Carter, John Brinsmead, and John Green. A servant, Mathew the Scotchman, was named on his list of assets. Will made May 5, 1650.  Inventory taken Jun 25, 1652.

Carter Genealogy Pages

The Teresa Miller Genealogy Page has several of our Carters, and her descending line of Brinsmeads and Bostwicks. Thomas Carter's daughter Mary Carter, married John Brinsmead. Her daughter, Mary Brinsmead then married a Bostwick, so this is a major branch of our family.

The Bob Carter Page has our Carter Family, including documentation of the sources of his work and a complete transcription of Thomas Carter's will. Very professionally done.

I prefer the individual messages. That I can filter them to a separate folder and thread messages of the same subject together like in my news program.
