The origins of Thomas Coates are unknown to me.Top of Page
Born: Abt 1620-1630 (married in 1650's)Top of PageResidence: Lynn, Essex Co, Mass by 1646
Spouse: Probably Elizabeth Flood, daughter of Joseph Flood of Dorchester and Lynn.
"On the 16 Sep 1652 "Obedia Flud of Boston and Thomas Coats of Lynn... both covenanted, bargained and sold to Henry Silsby of Ipswich... the now dwelling house of Thomas Coates in Lynn which was once in the occupation of Joseph Flud".Savage (New England Dictionary of NE Settlers) on Thomas Coates:On the 15 Dec 1652, Thomas Coates of Lynn conveyed to Robert Rand of that town, land in Lynn "which was lately of Joseph Flud".
Thus, it appears that that Thomas Coates and Obadiah Flood were co-heirs of Joseph Flood. No will is recorded." Carlfred B. Broderick, NEHGR 111:104-111, 1957 - Thomas Coates of Lynn, Mass, pg 104.
No other daughter for Joseph Flood is known other than the nine year old Elizabeth on the passenger list of the Abigail in 29 Jun 1635. Thus, it is believed that nine year old girl is Thomas Coates wife.
THOMAS, Lynn 1658, had John, bef. ment. James, and Thomas. Lewis. One Eleazer C. was k. 1677, careless. by John Flint, and £40. fine was impos. on F. one half to the f. of C. as Felt, in Col. Rec. II. 459, found; and in Col. Rec. V. 142, may be seen that one half of the £20. was remit. by the governm. on petitn. of Edward F. perhaps the f. of John.
