Our Aaron Burr -
Alexander Hamilton Connections
|
The duel between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton is a famous piece
of American history, which we are all taught in our history classes. Heretofore,
Burr has been painted as the fellow with the black hat and Hamilton with
the white hat. A recent work by one historian indicates that both hats
should actually be a bit grey.

Aaron Burr, lost presidency
to Jefferson by one vote, served as vice-president to Jefferson (back then
the second place finisher was V-P). Killed Hamilton in a duel. Later accused
of treason, apparently for efforts to populate the west. One current historian
suggests his efforts were no different in purpose or scope than those later
of Stephen Austin (the founder of Texas), and the suggestion of treason
was due to hyper-sensitivity of the times, along with Manifest Destiny
was not yet a concept that dominated American culture.

A current historian believes the duel was sparked by a remark that Alexander
Hamilton made that suggested that Aaron Burr's relationship with his daughter
was so close, that it suggested an incestuous relationship.

Hamilton 1757 - 1804
One of George Washington's stalwart cabinet officers,
pushed for big government. Had a
dramatic impact on the direction of our government
in the early years of our new Constitution. Killed by Aaron Burr in a duel.
Hamilton's illicit love affair had been uncovered before this, as well
as accusations that he had benefited from the dealings in war pensions.
His political career virtually in shambles, his life was further thrown
into chaos by the death of his son in a duel a year earlier. The actual
statement that Hamilton had made (apparently in a private party or speech)
that infuriated Burr is not clearly known, but one historian speculates
that Hamilton accused Burr of having an incestuous relationship with his
daughter, Theodosia; which would naturally infuriate Burr, leading to Burr's
challenge.
