Origins

The origins of James Owen of Wading River, Long Island have not been established with certainty, as far as I know. He is possibly a grandchild of the John Owen in the 1698 Southold census, who in turn, may be related to the Owen family of Brookhaven, LI. (In fact, Brookhaven is as close, or closer to, Wading River than the village of Southold, within the town of Southold.)

A John Owen, and then a Mary Owen, died in Southold 7 Jan 1737/38 and 18 May 1739/40, respectively, who may have been the John Owen in the 1698 census; and the grandparents of our James.

An Owen Genealogy, appearing in TAG Volumes 30:129-142; 31:33-39; places the John in the Southold 1698 census as "probably" a son of George-1 Owen of Brookhaven; but without any evidence, other than time and place. He witnessed deeds in Southold in 1699 and 1702. He was issued warrants 27 Apr 1702, by the sheriff of Suffolk County for "joiner work done at the fort." It should be noted there was also a Richard Owen, who appeared on the 4 Dec 1666 list of freeholders and in the 1667 tax list of Newtown, Long Island.

The following marriages occur in Southold the 1720's and 1730's, indicating a possible set of children from this John Owen in the 1698 census. As far as I know, no relationship between these Owens has been documented, but they are the only known Owens in this area at this time:

1723 1023 Jonathn Owin Bethi Terry
1726 1106 Samuel Clark Martha Owen
1734 0718 Daniel Terrill Elizabeth Owen
1734 0826 Daniel Reeve Sarah Owen
An Owen Family Genealogy appears in TAG Volumes 30:129-142; 31:33-39, showing the Jonathan Owen above as a son of the aforementioned John Owen in the 1698 census; then follows that Jonathan Owen to Orange Co, New York with a list of children, all found in Orange Co. If this genealogy is complete, our James would not be the son of that Jonathan, but possibly another, unrecorded brother. It is always possible he was a son of Jonathan and not picked up in the TAG genealogy... or simply another offshoot of the Brookhaven Owen family. That Jonathan had a son named Gershom Owen, who had a son named Terry Owen, indicating Terry ties. Gershom is a characteristic Terry name, and also the name of the father of Bethia Terry.

That genealogy (in TAG) only mentions Jonathan as a (possible) child of John (in the 1698 Southold census), saying "children have not been identified but may include"... Jonathan. It does not mention the three Owen girls married in Southold in the same time frame, other than to say "may have been father of of some of those of the Owen name who later appear in the early Southold Records", apparently referring to the three girls married in the 1720's and 1730's above.

Later, in the 1750's, we have the following marriages, which could be younger children of that John, or, more likely if descended from him, grandchildren:

1749 0700 James Owen > Mary Paine
1753 0315 Jonathan Owen > Mary Dains
1755 0930 Ralph Skidmore > Hannah Owen
The author of the aforementioned TAG article was of the belief that the Jonathan Owen md Mary Dains above was not of the Owen family of Brookhaven, because a record referred to him as an Irishman. I have not discovered any tie between James and the other two Owens above.

We now come to James Owen of Wading River, Long Island, our ancestor.

The Earliest Known Top-of-Line Owen Ancestor

James Owen is established as the husband of Mary Paine, daughter of John Paine of Wading River, by the Salmon Marriage Record shown above, along with the following agreement. It follows, chronologically, the will of John Paine, Mary's father. Note that a Mary (__) Paine was referred to in John Paine's will as daughter-in-law, as well as a daughter named Mary, last name (ie married name) not given. The Mary Paine referred to in the agreement is likely Mary (Tuthill) Paine, widow of John Paine, son of the 1762 testator John Paine (and not the Mary (Paine) Owen, wife of James). In other words, the two brothers-in-law are acquiting their wives' sister-in-law from claims they have on the estate.

"Know all men by these presents that We John Robinson of Brookhaven and James Owen of Southold in County of Suffolk and Province of New York Do hereby acquit and Discharge Mary Pain of Southold widow of and from all Demands which we have of and upon the said Mary Pain for any goods and chattles which belong to the Estate of Capt. John Pain late of Southold aforesaid Deceased. As witness our hands this 21st day of May 1762"

"witness William Albertson"     signed "John Robinson"  "James Owen"

A possible family for James Owen is:
Descendants of James Owen

 1   James Owen 1725 - 1798
..  +Mary Paine 1728 - 1788
......... 2   Son Owen 1750 - 1754

.............  +Jacob Aldrich 1755 - 1840
......... 2   Micah Owen 1761 - 1838

Jacob-5 (Jacob-4,3, Peter-2, George-1) and Mary (Owen) Aldrich had a son named James Owen Aldrich. Grandchildren named Hannah Owen Hallock, Mary Owen Hallock, Micah O. (Owen?)Aldrich. Their marriage record is found in Mattituck Parish Records: Nov 21, 1782. This naming pattern, plus the Mattituck marriage record, establishes the link from Mary to her parents.

A James Owen appears in the 1778 Census list of Wading River, Long Island with a family of 8. The following Owens appear in the 1778 "Oath of Allegiance" to the British, showing males only and their ages:

Owen James - age 57 - born 1721 -  Farmer
Owen Abijah - age 25 - born 1753 -  Farmer
Owen Micah - age 17 - born 1761 -  Farmer

The year of birth is calc'd from the 1778 census date.

I have not found any estate records or will of James Owen of Wading River, Long Island. He and Mary are reportedly buried in Wading River Cemetery, Wading River, Long Island (Frost). Mary died in 1788, before the 1790 census, Wading River. James died in 1798, Wading River. I do not find James in the 1790 census; perhaps he is staying with a daughter.

Abijah and Michah Owen are in the 1790 census:

Abijah Oven (sic): 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16, 2 females.
Micah Oven (sic): 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16, 2 females, 1 slave
