The Immigrant

On-line biographies:
Mark's Genealogy Corner has material on the English Goodrichs and the early years of William and John in Wethersfield, Conn and the first families of these immigrants. (Note this web page shows Elizabeth, wife of John Goodrich, as daughter of Thomas Edwards. This is incorrect, per Jacobus, in Hale, House, 1978. She is possibly the sister of Thomas Read's wife Katherine (__) (per Torrey).

Michael Roman's research material and biography of immigrant John Goodrich.

Sources and Resources
Hale, House and Related Families, Donald Lines Jacobus and Edgar Francis Waterman, 1978, has the latest English ancestry of the Goodrich brothers. He then presents information for one generation of immigrants John and William and takes several branches of William further, down to about the Revolution. This is the source that discounts John Goodrich's wife as being an Edwards.

History of Ancient Wethersfield, by Henry R. Stiles, 1904, contains 20 pages of Goodrich genealogy. Shows one generation for John and then his son Jonathan and then no more. The rest is on William's progeny.

Goodrich Genealogy - The early generations and English material in this reference have been supplanted by the work of Jacobus in Hale, House, but this work does contain many downstream branches.

Notes, Questions, Errata

Wife of John Goodrich was NOT daughter of Thomas Edwards of Wethersfield. Earlier information reported that Elizabeth, wife of John Goodrich, was a daughter of Thomas Edwards of Wethersfield. Jacobus, in Hale, House, reports: "His wife, Elizabeth, in nearly all printed accounts, is placed as a daughter of Thomas Edwards; but since Edwards, by his stated age at death, was born about 1621 and also was referred in 1657 by Winthrop as a "young man," he could hardly have been father of Elizabeth Goodrich whose eldest child was born in 1645 when her alleged father was about twenty-four years old." Jacobus offers no further explanation for who she might be. Note that a TAG article from the 1980's has delineated the genealogy of the Edwards family of Wethersfield with no mention of her, except acknowledging the Hale, House and Related Families conclusion that she was not an Edwards.

Torrey shows that Elizabeth, wife of John Goodrich, was likely a sister of Katherine, wife of immigrant Thomas Read of Sudbury. Note that Thomas Read, Jr.  married Mary Goodrich, a daughter of John and Elizabeth (__) Goodrich. This would explain why a Sudbury lad married a Wethersfield, Conn lassie. If their mothers were sisters, then they would have been first cousins.

Grandparents of the Goodrich brothers. I have seen a couple of different variations of names for grandparents of the Goodrich brothers. (Father of John Goodrich, died 1632.) The most recent, authoritative information I have is from Hale, House, 1978, which identifies the grandfather as William Goodrich, who was buried at Hessett, Co Suffolk, England on Oct 24, 1631. Jacobus reports that: "Quite likely, it was he who married at Felsham, co. Suffolk, in 1568, Margaret Richardson." Jacobus also shows the siblings of John Goodrich, who died in 1632.

William Goodrich of Watertown. Jacobus, in Hale, House, speculates that a real estate record in early Watertown for John Goodrich, "may" have been the John Goodrich, who then moved to Wethersfield, Conn. But, the William Goodrich of Watertown is definitely a different man than William Goodrich of Wethersfield. No relationship is known to exist between the two William Goodrich's. William Goodrich of Wethersfield, Conn married Sarah Marvin.  William Goodrich of Watertown, Mass married Margaret Butterfield. I have seen some genealogies that even combine these two fella's into one person! Showing one William Goodrich married to both of these ladies at the same time.
